A Simple, Great Way to Help the Homeless: Care Canisters

Care Canister for the Homeless By Mitscoots Outfitters

When we pass someone in need on the street we often say to ourselves, “I should do something.” Well, here is one simple thing you can do to help improve the day of someone in need. It won’t solve all the problems of homelessness and it may not change the world, but for one person you can make it a little better.

Make a Care Canister

Most often individuals experiencing homelessness don’t have the basic necessities many of us take for granted. Things like a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, a clean pair of socks or a bite to eat. These are simple things that aren't often given much thought but can make a huge difference in the life of someone going through other more complex problems.

Care Canisters provide these resources in one simple waterproof container that’s easy to pass along and can make more of an impact than you may realize. Your self-made Care Canister is the perfect thing to carry in your bag or car and can be passed along at a moment's notice to someone you think could use some help. It won’t solve the biggest of problems, but it could be just the thing to get someone through the day and let them know they aren't invisible.

Here are just some of the items that we put in our Care Canisters:

  • A pair of socks

  • Toiletry items: bar of soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, Purell, pack of gum

  • Snacks: box of raisins, granola bar, crackers, peanut butter and pretzels

For the canisters themselves, we suggest reaching out to local schools, Tennis clubs, and gyms. Often the canisters are just thrown away or at best recycled.

Once you have your canister put together, keep it on hand to give. It can just start with a smile or eye contact, but the goal is to help someone and you can make that happen.

        .

Through our giving program, Mitscoots Outfitters has given out thousands of Care Canisters around the country to those in need. When someone buys an item at our retail store, we hand them a Care Canister, so they can give directly to someone in their community. If you would like to make Care Canisters as a community service project or get involved with a Mitscoots Volunteer Opportunity, please email us at info@mitscoots.com, and we will be in touch.

Where did you get all the empty tennis ball canisters? We have done this with zip top bags, but the snacks get beat up riding around in the car.

Wonderful idea. Any tip on where to get empty tennis ball tubes? Pro shops or tennis clubs maybe? I know folks would appreciate a pair of Mitscoots socks in those tubes! God bless.

Y’all just better all the time. Thanks for all you do for homeless folks. And for caring for others in general. Forget presidential cadidates and any official authorities: people like you are what will make America, the world, a better place.
