Father’s Day is just a few days away. Yet, we don’t usually think about the fact that many homeless men are fathers. The majority of homeless shelters do not offer housing for children and the ones that do, provide shelter for a mother and child, but not for single fathers. Many families separate when they do become homeless because of this problem. Of the homeless male population in the United States, 41% have children under the age of 18, but only 7% of those men actually live with one mile of their children.
That said, there are some great organizations trying to fill the gap to provide housing for single dads raising their children on the streets. We are proud to call these organizations our Giving Partners. Lifeworks offers their Young Parents Program and serves parenting young moms and/or dads between the ages of 18 and 21 who are facing homelessness. Each family has their own apartment and has access to staff for safety and support. Parents meet with case managers weekly to review progress on goals, and also attend parenting and independent living skills classes each week.
Additionally, Foundation for the Homeless offers a shelter program based on a national model (Family Promise) that provides transitional shelter for children and their families experiencing homelessness. Host churches, synagogues and support congregations work in collaboration to provide year round shelter, meals, and a loving presence while FFH staff provide transportation, case management, referrals and other supportive services to families as they work toward achieving goals of permanent housing and self-sufficiency.
We want to celebrate all dads and the organizations that are helping them in their time of need! A special Fathers Day thank you to our giving partners who are serving dads. Give your dad a huge hug and thank him for his part in your life.
